Non-Workers of the World, Unite

Well, that’s me. I’m on the other side of the moon now and everybody is going to have to wait until I pop out.

I have been gleefully in between jobs for almost 1 month. Ive taken a side job or 2 since Ive gone “in between lives”, but as far as society and my 9-5 brethen judge me, I am out of work. This is by choice, completely. Let me tell you, I am not alone.

Some of my friends work 2nd shift, 4PM – 12AM. So I have been catching lunch, going to the mall, attending matinĂ©es, running errands with them, until 2PM or so, when they have to start getting to work. My other friends are in between tours rock and rollers and, at the moment, are out of work in the truest sense of the word. They prey on the non-worker, out of boredom and loneliness.

So what do we non-workers, or Day Walkers, as I like to call ourselves DO, whilest you work 9-5? Well, it is the summer, so there was plenty of beach going, eating lunch, watching movies, running various errands, going to the various malls and shopping plazas, there’s always nothing to do, hanging around, watching TV, playing cards, then of course there is always something to do, riding bikes, taking a walk, participating in various discussion groups and talks, attending various art and performances. Not to mention the sleeping one can catch up on.

Ive never been a late sleeper, but now, not having to be somewhere at 9AM, I am usually up by 930AM, not rising especially early, but not wasting away the day either. Getting a good night’s sleep is almost a cure all. Especially if the night’s sleep is not plagued with stress or worries about a job!

So in conclusion and in summation… This little vacation from the “real world” has been very fun, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is in fear of burning out too young. And while I have had plenty of fun while being a Day Walker, I do enjoy some of the things a job can provide: intellectual stimulation, a steady paycheck, a sense of productivity, a sense of self worth. etc. etc. etc.

Don’t get me wrong though, I’ll still play the lottery in the hopes of winning and never having to work another day in my life. This has, without a doubt, been The Summer of Stickney, the first one in a long time. At the moment though, Ill be satisfied with a cool job at a kickass company, and whatever freedoms I can afford!

The Simpsons Movie

So we’ll march day and night,
By the big cooling tower,
They have the plant,
But we have the power.

Let me preface this by saying that I have been a Simpsons devotee since the earlier 90s. I remember watching the episodes, talking about them in school the next day. Back in the days of the 1 TV household, I hooked up an old TV with rabbit ears in THE GARAGE, sat out in the cold and watched the Simpsons. But sometime after high school, I watched less and less. Maybe it was me, was I really too old for cartoons? But no, I watched South Park, Family Guy, but The Simpsons always held a dear place in my heart. Unfortunately, the show just got progressively worse. Maybe it felt it was being assaulted by the other cartoons. Family Guy was taking irreverence to an entirely different level, and South Park was making social and political commentary to beat the band.

By the time I reached college, I was barely watching it. It just got too out there, especially for The Simpsons. Homer hardly worked, the family went on wild and crazy adventures, the show was based less and less in reality. Thinking back to my favorite episodes, they are probably 6 or 7 years old. Who shot Mr. Burns?, “Lisa needs braces… Dental Plan!”, “Shake haaaaaarder boy!”, Camp Krusty ( “Gentlemen, to Evil!” ), Hank Scorpio, “Dont you hate pants?”. Genius episodes. Then, just when I just about gave up on the show, they came out with a movie. Yesterday I went with Webster, another Simpsons devotee of old, and saw the film.

Not ruining anything, in the first 2 minutes of the film, Homer makes fun of people who would pay to see something they can see on TV for free. I tend to agree. The movie was exactly what I thought it would be, one gigantically drawn out episode, with some laughs in between. And by the silence of the audience during some “jokes”, I was not alone in my feeling of “meh”. My one moment of excitement was when I heard Albert Brooks’ voice. I thought Hank Scorpio was making a comeback, how AMAZING that wouldve been.

All and all, I felt the entire movie couldve been cut to one hour and wouldve served as the perfect last episode of the show ever.

Last Day of Work

It’s something unpredictable, but in the end it’s right. I hope you had the time of your life.

Today was my last day of work at Pawtuxet Valley. I met and worked with some great people and I will remember them fondly. I will take with me 3 years of experiences that taught me a great deal about dealing with people. But, life goes on, and so it goes.

Boston awaits!
